Greetings to the Media

21 April 2006

Dear media industry colleagues,

It has already been one year since Ching Cheong went north cover stories in China , and did not return. All of your unremitting concern, care and support over the year are appreciated. But in this endless waiting, only anxiety and helplessness accompany his family members and me.

The following is the only thing I could report to all of you: friends from various quarters who support Ching Cheong are still working hard and hoping the incident can be settled soon. For this reason, the family members are still optimistic.

The Ching Cheong that his family and friends know is a man who embraces ideal; is patriotic; strives to promote peaceful unification of and to minimize the risk of any cross-straits military crisis. He only worries that the country is not secure enough and could absolutely not do anything to endanger China 's national security. He is upright and honest; kind-hearted and with noble morality; enthusiastic in helping others and does not expect any rewards; his personality has remained unchanged all these years. Ching Cheong possesses a strong mentality of working on behalf of others. His early ideal was to become an international volunteer. Later, he thought that China was developing and it was better for him to serve his country rather than other developing countries. In a visit to the Mainland, he brought back a piece of coal as a souvenir from a coal mine in Fu Shun ( Liaoning Province ). But the customs officer considered it was a state secret and confiscated that piece of coal. Therefore, he thought that it was necessary to enlighten the people, if China really wanted to grow. This is the reason why he gave up his original profession in geology and regional development, and become a journalist in Wen Wei Po . In this press conference, a book that is edited by his friends will be given out. You will understand him by reading his articles and articles about his behaviours.

One year thus far. It is really a long time seen from any perspective. Ching Cheong has been with the investigative officers for a long period of time; they should understand more about him now. Ching Cheong could not betray the safety of our country because of monied interests and I believe this is now clear to the authorities. I and our family members urge the related departments to clarify the facts of this case and settle it as early as possible in order to release Ching Cheong. I believe that this can help to promote a sense of patriotism and build a harmonious society.

Best regards,

Mary Lau
